'An importer's saga' is my 2nd lj journal. The original, which contains more personal stuff and observations about science, can be found at
jmklng.
I have been a freelance science writer since 1996. In 2004, I began a new venture: an import company. My fiance
mareklamo is Filipina, and in collaboration with her and her father (a fisheries consultant based in Manila), I've decided to look into importing traditional Filipino brooms to selected markets in the US. This journal is dedicated to that venture, as I go through the process of figuring out customs, determining markets, and winding my way through the morass of learning about marketing, accounting, and all of the other crucial details.
As for the brooms, they are made of the spines of coconut leaves bound together at one end. Here's a picture with a handle, and here's one without.
So, what's the deal with name 'greedyhippie?' I'm still an idealist, even at the ripe old age of 37. I like the idea of a business that allows people in the Philippines and other parts of Asia to continue to practice ancient traditions, if they so choose, and be able to make a living from it. That's why this import company will focus on traditional, hand-made products, and finding appropriate US markets for them (the brooms will be initially targeted towards gardening stores and Asian grocery stores).
I'm also ambitious. My intent is that this will one day be a large company, with a number of different products from different countries, and perhaps expanding into markets in Europe. In short, I want to make money.
Hence, greedyhippie.
